An England rugby union player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been arrested for allegedly raping a teenager.
Following the report of an attack at a nightclub, the player was held Sunday, reported Daily Mail. Along with the player, a woman, 41, was also arrested for allegedly administering a substance with intent to cause a sexual offence. While detectives continue their investigations, the player and the woman have been released on bail.
A police spokesperson said that cops were called shortly before 11 am on Jan. 9 to a "report of a sexual assault" on a woman. The spokesperson added that the victim was in her late teens, and that a man was arrested on suspicion of rape. A woman also was arrested on suspicion of administering a substance with intent to cause a sexual offence, shared the spokesperson.
According to Daily Mail, the teen is being supported by specialist officers.
Following the news, Sale Sharks issued a statement saying that the player has been suspended. The statement read that the Sale Sharks have been "made aware of an allegation against one of its players" and the subsequent arrest of that player by Greater Manchester Police on Jan. 9.
The rugby union club said that the player in question "has been suspended" until further notice, and is currently cooperating with cops to assist in their investigation. The club refused to comment further as the case is "subject to a legal process."
Meanwhile, Victoria Cipriani, wife of England rugby union player Danny Cipriani, has strongly denied any link to the allegation and arrest, reported The Guardian. Victoria, who is 41 years old, was anxious that people may have wrongly assumed there was a connection with the case because of her age.
She tweeted that neither her husband nor herself were arrested, and that they have nothing to do with the reported case. She even said that the couple knows nothing about it. She noted that the media had approached "the wrong people," and so she asked "they please leave us alone, immediately." She found her and her husband's names to be linked to this case "hugely upsetting for so many reasons." She pleaded people to share her statement with others and thanked them for "taking note of this.”
