It seems like Emmanuel is stuck in the past, just like his songs. The Mexican singer, who is currently touring Mexico next to Manuel Mijares with “Twor Amigos,” is making headlines after expressing his opinion about the gender-fluid generation, one of the most recent classifications in the LGBT community.
“I don’t want to scare you, and I find it a little bit hard to say what I’m going to say,” the “La Chica de Humo” performer said on stage during one of his concerts. “But the books provided by SEP (Secretaría de Educación Pública) are now asking teachers to bring to school one kit of clothes for boys, and one kit of clothes for girls. They will tell boys to dress like girls, and girls to dress like boys.”
He continued, “We can’t allow them [SEP] to destroy our family, we need to fight for our family, we need to fight for our children, they want to take our sons and daughters away.”
These comments came after Enrique Peña Nieto announced his proposal of constitutionalizing gay marriage in the country.
In May, the President of Mexico said he would look into reforming Article 4 of Mexico’s Constitution in support of the Supreme Court’s ruling of recognizing marriage as a human right without discrimination.
After the video of Emmanuel’s speech went viral, social media users took to Twitter to express their discontent with the singer’s statement.
“So from the '80s, just like his music and his looks,” said Manolo Caro. “Emmanuel’s homophobic speech is just planting hate, as if there wasn’t enough of that already.”
Even his tour partner, Mijares, joined the conversation and explained that he did not agree with what his fellow musician stated during the concert.
“Hector! I agree with you,” he said in response to Héctor Salinas, who also condemned Emmanuel’s words of hate. “People present at the show can corroborate that I did not give any speeches.”
Emmanuel has yet to address the situation.
