Emilio Azcárraga Jean is rumored to be leaving the presidency at Televisa. The news broke via Diario Basta columnist, Lupita Reyes. "As in any business in crisis and restructuring, adjustments always make way for rumors among employees. Today they say that Emilio Azcárraga is about to leave his post as president of Grupo Televisa," she wrote. "His place would be taken by Arianna Azcárraga, his sister. As vice president of the network would be Alejandro "El Güero" Burillo, his cousin. They say that these changes would take place starting April 1."
News of Jean's departure shocked everyone as he has been the face of the network for decades, but Televisa has been facing stiffer competition, not just from TV Azteca and Imagen TV, but from outside sources like Netflix, who dominates the landscape in streaming. Televisa introduced their own OTT platform last year called Blim, to take away market share from the U.S. platform, but no numbers have been released about market penetration yet. In social media, Blim has been a joke, with naysayers comparing it to Netflix, but with lower quality programming.
Countering the news that Azcárraga Jean would be leaving his post at Televisa, Maxine Woodside broke the news that it was all falsehoods. What ever the truth us, let's remember last year when they announced that Joaquín López-Doriga, Adela Micha, Lolita Ayala, Victor Trujillo and other journalists were set to be let go, news was debunked, only to have them confirm they would all be losing their shows at the end of the year months later.
