Elham Sadat Asghari is an Iranian swimmer who recently broke a record she set in 2011. The record has gone ignored and is considered void by the Iranian government and the sports authority.
The Islamic country has strict rules and regulations regarding women, their appearance and their place in society. Despite the fact that Elham Sadat Asghari was covered from head to toe the Iranian government said her bathing suit was too revealing and there for her record does not stand.
On June 11, Elham Sadat Asghari swam 20 kilometers in the Caspian Sea. When she reported her new record to Iran's sports authorities they tried to take two kilometers off of her swim then ultimately decided they would not recognize Elham Sadat Asghari's accomplishment. The reason Iran will not validate the record is because when Elham Sadat Asghari exited the water her figure was visible.
Female swimmers in Iran must be covered at all times. No part of their body can be shown. Men and women may not swim together in public pools and female swimmers cannot compete on an international level "for fear that men will see them," The Inquisitr reports.
The Inquisitr also reports that Elham Sadat Asghari is not unfamiliar with run-ins with the Iranian authorities. In 2010, Elham Sadat Asghari and a group of other swimmers were attempting to swim around Kish Island in three days.
Iranian police boats purposefully crashed into Elham Sadat Asghari and the group she was with leaving them all cut and injured. Elham Sadat Asghari was near the boat's propellers when the collision occurred she suffered an injured leg and a hip laceration.
It took Elham Sadat Asghari a few years after that incident before she swam again. Despite the fact that she is being denied official recognition of the record Elham Sadat Asghari has a Facebook page with over 5,000 likes and support from fans and fellow swimmers.
