An elderly man from Houston who was visiting his rehab patient wife allegedly shot his spouse dead before shooting himself in an apparent murder-suicide in a facility in Houston.
The double shooting reportedly occurred at around 2 p.m. at NeuroRestorative, 9551 Fannin in south Houston on Sunday, Aug. 15. The Houston facility works with people suffering from brain and spinal cord illnesses, medically complex injuries, illnesses, and other challenges, according to their website.
The identities of the elderly couple have been withheld as of now, the New York Daily News reported.
The 70-year-old wife, who recently suffered a stroke and was admitted to the rehab facility, reportedly asked her husband to come and visit her. However, after the husband and wife were left alone in the room, the staff reportedly began hearing popping sounds but ignored the noise.
Later, when the staff went to check on them, they found the woman slumped over in her wheelchair. The staff rushed to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her but noticed a severe gunshot wound on the woman's body. The husband was also discovered lying beside the woman with a fatal gunshot wound, according to Click2Houston.
The couple was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple's death is being investigated as a murder-suicide.
“We are cooperating with a police investigation related to an incident at our facility today,” NeuroRestorative said in a statement. “All other individuals and employees at the facility are safe, and we are currently reaching out to families and caregivers to update them on the well-being of their loved ones.”
In a similar but unrelated incident, a mother of four who won US$2 million in the California Lottery during the pandemic was allegedly killed by her husband. He also fatally shot their 1-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself, Latin Times reported.
The victim, 31-year-old Tiffani Hill, and the suspect, her husband, 42-year-old John Donato, were found dead at their Calera, Oklahoma, home on July 30. The one-year-old toddler, Leanne Donato, who was injured in the shooting succumbed to his serious injuries at the hospital.
The older Donato reportedly shot Hill and then turned the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide, according to the FBI who are investigating the crime as the incident occurred on tribal land.
Hill and Donato reportedly got married and moved to Oklahoma after she won US$2 million in November 2020 from a Scratchers lottery ticket that she had purchased at the Valley Springs Mini Mart in Calaveras County.
Hill's three other children were also present in the home at the time of the shooting. The children are uninjured and Hill’s family is now working to get the children back to California.
The lottery money will reportedly be deposited in a trust for the three children.
