Following a somewhat forgettable first half, Miguel Herrara managed to find some confidence in his team to equal 2-2 against the United States in a friendly played at the University of Phoenix in Arizona. The first half saw a number of misses as the Mexican team seemed worriedly distracted. However, Herrera was able to find composure in his team thanks in large part to the work of players like Jimenez, Medina, Aguilar, and Montes who helped El Tri back on track.
El Tri could not quite overcome the American team, now led by Jürgen Klinsmann for the fifth time. At the 14th miunute, Michael Bradly slipped past Jesus Zavala and was able to score, making it 1-0 against El Tri who seemed bored and sleepy after arriving at the stadium just half-an-hour before the match was scheduled to begin. At the 27th minute, Crhis Wondolowski again scored for the US, bringing the match to 2-0 against El Tri after beating both Juan Carlos Valenzuela and Rogelio Chávez to the scoring box.
Miguel Herrera made some changes to his side at the half-time mark, replacing Moisés Muñoz, Jesús Zavala and Carlos Peña with Alfredo Talavera, Juan Carlos Medina and Raúl Jiménez, respectively. At the 48th minute, Rafael Márquez was the first to score for El Tri after taking advantage of a lapse in the American defense. Mexico's persistence would triumph once more at the 67th minute with Paul Aguilar, Luis Montes and finally Alan Pulido who scored to tie up the match.
