El Tri's pre-World Cup friendly matches have been announced and the Mexican team will be facing Nigeria, South Korea and Ecuador in the lead up to the World Cup in Brazil. The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) and Soccer United Marketing (SUM) announced that Mexico will play Nigeria at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome on Wednesday, March 5 (8:30 p.m. ET) and Ecuador at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX on Saturday, May 31(3:00 p.m. ET).
El Tri's first match, as Latin Times reported earlier, will be against South Korea at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX on Wednesday, January 29. The remaining U.S. Tour games for 2014 in the lead up to Brazil's Fifa World Cup have not been announced. El Tri can expect big crowds for the match against Nigeria: Mexico's appearances in Atlanta have averaged 52,000 fans per game. In 2013, 54,229 fans watched El Tri defeat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0.
El Tri can expect and even bigger roar from Texas' AT&T Stadium - when la Selección National played there in July 2013, more than 80,000 soccer fans attended the CONCAF Gold Cup Semifinals. Mexico will be seeking to redeem the U20s World Cup loss to Nigeria: however, El Tri has a 1-0-3 record against the African team. Nigeria will also be playing in the World Cup in Group F where they will take on giants Argentina as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran in Group F.
