Drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman may have spent Christmas behind bars, but his “untouchable” sons are still in vogue. In fact, one of them recently hosted a massive Christmas bash in Sinaloa and lavished locals with exorbitant gifts like cars and SUVs. This Mexican province is one of the many provinces terrorized by El Chapo’s family’s violent drug cartel.
On Christmas day, Ivan Archivaldo Guzman shared on Instagram photos of the extravagant holiday party, where El Chapo’s son feted residents with abundant food, huge gifts, and a live band. One video also showed the 36-year-old handing supermarket plastic bags teeming with goodies to the residents of Sinaloa and treating them to a car giveaway.
Attached to the plastic bags were Christmas tags with the words, “May this season be full of happiness. May the light provide you faith and love. Ivan Archivaldo wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
Several videos of the bling party also made the rounds on social media, showing a row of at least 10 cars and SUVs lined up at the event, including a Honda Civic that retails for $18,000 in Mexico. The gesture reminded many Mexicans of the ways of El Chapo’s former Colombian narco-terrorist associate Pablo Escobar, who also used to throw several community Christmas soirees and play Robin Hood before he died a tragic death in 1993.
The Instagram posts are no longer online, but one of the posts that went viral featured Jose Feliciano’s holiday classic, “Feliz Navidad,” playing in the background as kids shout in unison, “Thank you Don Ivan!” Ivan Archivaldo Guzman is one of El Chapo’s six sons who took over the Sinaloa cartel after their father was extradited to the U.S. and sentenced to life imprisonment in Brooklyn back in February.
Meanwhile, the lavish party and goodwill giveaway hosted by Guzman came as Mexicans celebrated Las Posadas in Sinaloa. This nine-day novenario is celebrated every year in Latin America, Mexico, Guatemala and Cuba to commemorate the journey of Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus Christ.
