"El Chapo" Guzmán was arrested nearly three months ago, however, the exact details that led to his arrest are only just coming to light. A new report in The New Yorker Magazine provides the details of the investigation that resulted in the arrest of one of the world's most wanted criminals. It seems that the arrest of Jose Rodrigo Arechiga, or "El Chino Antrax" was a key first step in "El Chapo"s capture as the repercussions of this assassin's arrest rippled across the Sinaloa Cartel and were vital in pinpointing "El Chapo"s exact location.

"El Chapo" Guzmán is described by the magazine as typical of an "older generation. Obsessively secretive, he ran his multibillion-dollar drug enterprise from hiding in Sinaloa." This made him almost impossible to track down. However, "El Chino Antrax" and various other younger cartel members represent a "narcotraficante of the digital age." When El Chino Antrax was arrested in Amsterdam "authorities on both sides of the border intercepted scores of phone calls, texts, and e-mails. They learned that Guzmán would soon be coming to Culiacan," initiating the entire capture process.

Jose Rodrigo Arechiga Gamboa, known as "El Chino Antrax," was arrested at the airport in Amsterdam on charges of trafficking meth amphetamines, cocaine and marijuana in January this year. Gamboa was extradited to the United States where he is wanted on similar drug trafficking charges in San Diego. The arrest occurred at the behest of US authorities who contacted Interpol for help in the arrest. Gamboa was flying from Mexico City. Arechiga Gamboa was part of a team of hitmen known as "Antrax," named after the deadly poison. The group worked for the Sinaloa Cartel, headed by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
