'El Chapo' Guzman was arrested in Mazatlan, Mexico early on Saturday morning - it was one of the biggest arrests in the country's history. Slowly, details of the moment the Sinaloa Cartel leader was arrested have emerged, and now it seems that his young wife and former beauty queen Emma Coronel was key to the ease with which El Chapo was aprhehended. It seems that the 22-year-old was indeed in the apartment with Mr. Guzman with their children, preventing El Chapo from firing even a single round.
Emma Coronel was in fact the first person the marines encountered when they entered the Mazatlan apartment when El Chapo was arrested. "I'm by myself," she insisted, desperately trying to protect her husband. The marines searched the entire apartment: everywhere except the main bathroom, where El Chapo Guzman was hiding. However, he offered no resistence: he knew that if he indeed used one of the many weapons available to him, ti could have turned into a blood bath. He came peacefully for the sake fo his wife and daughters.
"He was with his daughters. At that time in the morning, everyone was asleep. His secretary and heady bodyguard [Carlos Manuel Hoo] was the only one who managed to fire a round," the Mexican Attorney General's office told Univision.com. "He didn't take out his guns to protect his family," they explained. "When asked why he had not escaped, why he hadn't tried to flee, he said that he wanted to but then he saw his daughters. It's the another side to a very violent person."
