A Mexican judge has denied a writ of amparo put forward by the defense team of Jesus 'El Chango' Méndez to prevent his extradition. The First District Court Judge of Penal Matters in Mexico City that the amparo made by Jesus 'El Chango' Méndez against his extradition has been denied. The former 'La Familia' leader was arrested in 2011 during an operation in Aguascalientes. Méndez is wanted in the United States for charges relating to drug trafficking.
The Mexican judge revealed that the circumstances of 'El Chango' Méndez imprisonment - he is currently being held in a temporary prison while he awaits going before a federal judge - does not impede his extradition to the United States where he is wanted on different charges. The Federal District Courto of New York is seeking to try 'El Chango' Méndez for charges of trafficking cocaine and methamphetamines in the territory. Méndez was leader of 'La Familia' from 2005 to 2011.
The writ of amparo is a law exclusive to the Mexican justice system that provides protection against any act by Mexican authorities. Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman recently underwent a similar process: the drug boss has charges pending in New York, Illinois, California and Texas. In the event that the United States does demand 'El Chapo's extradition, they would use as a basis for the request charges made against the Sinaloa Cartel leader going back almost twenty years. The charges range from drug trafficking, cocaine possession and money laundering.
