Efforts to Identify Woman Set on Fire in NYC Subway Have Made 'Some Progress,' Brooklyn DA Says

Progress has been made in identifying the victim of a vicious attack in New York City last week, in which a woman was set on fire in the subway as she slept.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez told press on Friday "some progress" had been made in identifying the victim of the brutal attack.

"Advanced fingerprinting efforts is being made, as well as advanced DNA evidence," he said.

33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta, who allegedly set the sleeping woman alight, has been indicted on one count of murder in the first degree, three counts of murder in the second degree and arson in the first degree, reported ABC News.

Gonzalez told press that he was confident in the case being built against Zapeta, and that his goal was to bring Zapeta to justice for his "malicious deed" against a "vulnerable woman."

Zapeta is required to appear in court on Jan. 7 for his arraignment after having waived his court appearance last Friday.

The incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, saw a man approach a sleeping victim and light her clothes on fire. The victim died of her injuries.

Authorities believe the attack was random and that the suspect did not know the victim prior.
