Edgar Tamayo Arias will be executed on Wednesday, Jan. 22 as planned. Despite numerous appeals to the US Supreme court, Mr. Tamayo Arias will be executed by lethal injection in Walls Prison Texas. At least two last-minute appeals wer launched by his legal team to the Supreme Court, however, they have since been rejected and Mr. Tamayo Arias will be put to death. He will be survived by his father, Hector Tamayo, who recently stated, "We have faith in God that the execution will be stopped and there will be a new trial."

Edgar Tamayo Arias has been the center of controversy after it was revealed that he was not offered consular assistance following his arrest by Texas officials, therfore violating the Vienna Convention to which the US is signatory. However, Texas officials have been unwavering in their stance. "It doesn't matter where you're from," Perry spokeswoman Lucy Nashed said. "If you commit a despicable crime like this in Texas, you are subject to our state laws, including a fair trial by jury and the ultimate penalty."

Numerous human rights groups from around the world have condemned the execution: "We at the International Commission against the Death Penalty -- an independent body opposed to capital punishment and led by a group of high-profile commissioners from across the world -- are urging the Texas authorities not to proceed with Mr. Tamayo’s execution. We appeal to them to investigate the case, hold a hearing to review the violation of the Vienna Convention, and consider commutation of the death sentence to a term of imprisonment."
