Earth Day is celebrated annually every April 22nd. The international festivity, which has become a tradition for the past 46 years, honors mother nature and our planet earth. People around the world, including environmentalists, celebrate this day in support of environmental protection.
In 1969, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth. At a UNESCO conference held in San Francisco, he suggested the event to take place on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. However, Earth Day was officially founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970. The first Earth Day celebration, in fact, garnered thousands of people, including college students and activists. The activity "brought 20 million Americans out into the spring sunshine for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform," according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Almost 50 years later, Earth Day is now observed in more that 193 countries. In celebration of this special day, here is a playlist with songs that some of our favorite Latino artists have released to raise awareness about environmental issues, to highlight the beauty of nature, and more.
