The Honolulu Police Department is continuing its manhunt for two murder suspects following the gruesome discovery of an elderly victim’s corpse found encased in concrete at his residence in the affluent gated community of Hawaii Loa Ridge.
On Monday night, suspects Scott Hannon, 34, and Juan Tejedor Baron, 23, were questioned by police after the victim’s brother filed the missing person’s report in the afternoon. The siblings had reportedly not been in touch since late January or early February, Hawaii News Now reported.
At the scene, detectives conducting a welfare check met with Baron, who claimed to be living at the residence. Police then invited the duo to the precinct to help with investigations and released them shortly afterward.
Officers even offered the duo a ride to Waikiki where they were last sighted early Tuesday at around 1 a.m. near the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Apparently, Hannon and Baron, who are non-residents of the community, were let go as there wasn’t enough probable cause at that time to arrest or detain them.
Cops would then later discover the body of a 73-year-old man inside a Lelekepue Place property. His corpse was in a standalone bathtub filled with concrete, where coffee grounds were placed atop to hide the smell of decomposition, according to the Star-Advertiser.
Lieutenant Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department Criminal Investigation Division then confirmed that Baron and the victim were in an intimate relationship.
He said investigations are ongoing and that at this point, police are yet to determine the victim's cause of death, the murder weapon, and the motive behind the attack, People noted. On Tuesday, neighbors expressed shock after hearing about the murder.
“I think it’s just absolutely terrible that that happened,” resident Sydney Holst said. “I mean, we’ve never had a serious crime like this happen before. We’ve heard of small robberies, but never to something to this degree.”
Police urge community members to avoid approaching the men if they see them within the area. Anyone with any information concerning the tandem's whereabouts is asked to contact CrimeStoppers Honolulu at 808-955-8300.
