A 23-year-old woman who was walking on the road after a fight with a friend was allegedly gang-raped by two men in the city of Jaipur in India.
The incident happened near the Bhankrota police station area in the city during the early hours on Monday, June 7.
According to local police, on Sunday evening, the victim along with her male companion, identified as Deepu, came to a restaurant bar in the C-scheme area on a scooter to meet two friends who had come there in a car.
"One of the boys who knew the guard of the restaurant paid him some money and arranged for some drinks. All the four, including the girl, consumed alcohol. Later, the girl's friend Deepu and one of the boys decided to go back home in the scooter, while Rakshit, the owner of the car, agreed to drop the girl home," the Times of India quoted the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pradeep Mohan Sharma as saying.
The girl then reportedly asked Rakshit to take her on a long drive, the police official said.
"They were both in an inebriated condition and allegedly had a verbal fight when they reached the 200-feet bypass. Rakshit dropped her near the Kamla Nehru Nagar flyover and left the place. While she was walking in a lane near Bhankrota, two men overpowered her and raped her," Sharma said.
"The girl also said that she was drunk and was unable to recall many things," the official said.
Police said the victim was repeatedly changing her statements.
"So far, it is clear that none of the boys who were with the girl are responsible for the rape. While she was walking in a lane near Bhankrota, two others picked her up and raped her," said Additional Commissioner of Police Ajay Pal Lamba.
After the alleged rape, the men left the victim on the road and fled the scene, the official said. The woman then managed to walk to the nearby police station and reported the incident.
"She was not in a condition to speak. With the help of women police officers her statements were recorded," Lamba said.
"We have detained a few persons, including the three who were with the girl on Sunday evening, and are questioning them. Hopefully, the accused will be arrested," Lamba added.
This is incident has exposed police's hollow claims of keeping vigil during the time of coronavirus lockdown in the city.
