A home intruder allegedly high on drugs has been accused of stabbing a man to death after jumping from balcony to balcony at a Queens apartment building and climbing through the victim’s third-floor window on Sunday, May 22.
On Sunday, May 22, the suspect, identified as Yang Zhang, 35, reportedly into the victim's apartment on 57th Road near Lawrence St. in Flushing while the 41-year-old victim Yat Wong and his wife were asleep.
The woman reportedly got startled seeing the knife-wielding Zhang break into their flat and bolted out of the apartment locking the door behind her. The home invader allegedly proceeded to stab Wong repeatedly until the victim bled to death. The suspect then fled back out the window and climbed onto a fourth-floor balcony, New York Post reported.
However, the residents of the apartment building managed to block him from getting inside any apartments on the fourth floor. He then climbed down to the backyard, where he was confronted by police officers who responded to the scene after they were notified about the stabbing.
The authorities subsequently subdued him with a taser. The police later found the mortally wounded victim lying in a bed inside his home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency medical workers reportedly took Zhang to New York-Presbyterian Queens. Investigators believe that Zhang was high on a hallucinogenic substance while stabbing the victim. He has been charged with murder, burglary, and weapon possession, Daily News reported.
“He didn’t have any blood on him,” said a neighbor Ruo Lin, 21. “There was no blood you could see.”
According to Teddy Wong, who lived next door to the victim, the man and his wife had lived in the building for about four years.
“I live here 40 years. I never think this thing [could] ever happen,” he said. “I have my windows open all the time. It’s safe.”
“We think it’s a lovely family,” another resident said. “When we heard the husband got killed, I felt so scared. I say, ‘Oh my God! This kind of thing happened to them? . . . We feel so sorry.”
“They look very ... peaceful,” said Patrick Tung, 28, who lives across the victim's street. “Peaceful. They look like a family, lovely family.”
