An Australian driver looked down to discover one of the most venomous snakes in the world at her feet after feeling like something was crawling up her leg.

The woman discovered the tiger snake while traveling down the freeway. She was safely able to pull over before trying to flag down other drivers, according to Victoria Police.

Tiger snakes are members of the cobra family. While they typically will not bite humans unless in instances of defense, tiger snake bites can lead to paralysis, muscle damage or even renal failure, according to the University of Melbourne.

After arriving at the scene, paramedics assessed the woman to make sure she had not been bitten, while police enlisted the help of Tim Nanninga from Melbourne Snake Control to wrangle the snake.

"Needless to say, slapping the cuffs on this offender wasn't an option so officers called in specialist forces," a Victoria Police spokesperson said. "Passing motorists were left in bewilderment as the massive snake was safely removed from the vehicle."

Nanninga said that he was quickly able to locate and remove the snake due to the distinct scent that tiger snakes have.

"It was actually inside the cab, under the dash. The poor lady, she was driving and it's come out from under her steering wheel, straight onto her lap and onto her leg," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Nanninga said that removing snakes from cars is not unusual for him, but this was the first time he did so on the freeway, and with a large audience of passersby and first responders.
