A Driver Thought He Ran Over a Pedestrian After Seeing a Body Lying in the Street. It Was Actually a Corpse That Fell Out of a Hearse

A Polish funeral home has issued an apology after a body they were transporting fell out of their hearse and onto the road, causing a passing driver to believe that a pedestrian was injured in an accident, according to a report.

A Polish man driving down the road in the city of Stalowa Wola was confronted by a sheet which landed on his car window. As the sheet slipped off the window, the man saw a body lying on the road, mistaking it for a pedestrian he believed he had accidentally hit with his car.

In reality, a hearse belonging to Hades funeral services was transporting a woman's body when the body fell out of the hearse and landed on the road, the Guardian reported.

Images of the body lying on the road atop a striped pedestrian crossing were then published by local media.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you that as a result of an unexpected technical failure of the electric tailgate lock in the hearse during the transport of the body of the deceased, an unfortunate event occurred which does not reflect the high standards of our company, our deep empathy towards the families of the deceased, and the respect we always show to the deceased," wrote Hades funeral services in a statement addressing the incident on their website.

They further apologized to "all those who were disappointed and upset by this event".
