DriveClub For PS4
DriveClub shows off its weather engine in its latest PS4 trailer at E3. Playstation

When it comes to making a great racing game, variety is the spice of life. Driving game fans can never have enough cars to drive, race tracks to tackle, and races to win. However, DriveClub takes the "more-is-better" philosophy even further by giving players power over one more variable: the weather.

Previous generations of racing games have featured various weather environments. Gran Turismo 6 pioneered real-time weather change and day/night transition when it debuted in December 2013. Now, DriveClub has pushed the envelope even further by not only producing a never-before-seen level of weather simulation and graphics rendering, but also by handing players the power to customize weather and weather change.

"Storm systems really do impact on the way a race plays out," reported IGN in an interview with Evolutions Studios Game Director Paul Rustchynsky. "Since the player has complete control over how diverse and dynamic the weather is, you can tailor it exactly to your liking. You can accelerate the the speed at which the weather changes, so it switches from gorgeous blue skies to a rain-sodden circuit over the course of a couple of laps."

DriveClub art director Alex Perkins also showed off how the game is capable of rendering puddles that form on the side of the road. Rocks and pebbles that line the course are more slick than the pavement. Every illuminated taillight reflects in the asphalt, and even the tires eject a rooster tail of mist over the roadway, just as it would in real life.

As you can imagine, changing weather conditions play a greater role in racing games than any other video game genre. Cars get looser and more difficult to control in slippery conditions. What's more, heavy storms will reduce visibility, making it difficult to follow behind the rooster tails of other cars and difficult to identify when and where the next corner arrives. Not only will weather conditions in DriveClub make a race more demanding of a player's reflexes and endurance, but the sheer terror of driving through a windy mountain path in the middle of a heavy blizzard will test a player's grit and courage as well!

DriveClub will be available on Oct. 7 exclusively on PS4. Be sure you watch the latest DriveClub trailer at E3 below! DriveClub will be available:
