Michael Abramson, the founder of the Boston-based company Drink Savvy has created a new kind of cup able to detect three different chemicals used as date rape drugs. The plastic material will change color if it comes in contact with GHB, ketamine and or rohyponal. These three drugs are popular among date rapists because of their powerful sedative effects.

Often victims have no memory of what happened to them while the drug was in their system. Drink Savvy is hoping their product will drastically decrease the number of people who are assaulted as a result of being date raped.

The drugs used for date rape have no taste, odor or color which makes them almost impossible to detect. The cups and straws created by Drink Savvy will expose the chemical before the drug passes the drinker's lips.

Abramson came up with the idea for the color changing material after he and several of his friends were themselves drugged. Working with a chemist from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, they developed the special material that will detect the date rape drugs.

"Within the past three years, three of my very close friends -- and myself -- have been the unwitting victims of being drugged. ... And I want to prevent it from happening to anyone else," Abramson told the New York Post.

An image on the drink Savvy website shows what the cup will look like if it were to detect any of the three drugs. If a beverage is safe the cup remains in its clear plastic state. If the drink is spiked red stripes will appear on the cup. The straw created by Drink Savvy will work the same way.

The company's website says they estimate the products will be ready to ship out to their contributors by September. The cups and straws will be available to the public early to mid-2014.
