A drilling operator accidentally caused his grandson’s death by drilling through him at a construction site in Spring, Texas on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The drilling operator and his 22-year-old grandson were reportedly drilling a hole for construction at an industrial warehouse site in the 22600 block of the North Freeway and Grand Parkway. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, at sometime around 10 a.m., the grandson ended up going into a hole. Unaware that anyone was inside the hole at the time, the victim's grandfather, also the machine operator, put a boring bit down into the hole, killing his grandson instantly, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported.

“We had a drilling operator that appears to have been drilling a hole for construction and he had his 22-year-old grandson with him and, at some point, the grandson either fell in - we don’t know how he got in the hole - but he ended up going in the hole and he was killed almost instantly,” Constable Mark Herman said.

According to Herman, the grandfather and grandson were working together as independent contractors for a company named Groundhog Foundation Drilling. The company was reportedly hired by Rosenberger Construction.

“I don’t want to get into the logistics of it, but the drill ended up killing him,” Herman said. “It’s very tragic and appears to be an accident.”

Following the tragic incident, the Spring Fire Department’s rescue team, assisted by firefighters from Spring and The Woodlands, tried to secure the hole so they could remove the man’s body, Click2Houston reported.

The victim’s and his grandfather's identities have not been released.

Following the incident, officers arrived on the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m. and Bedocs was transported by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital with “multiple traumatic injuries.” However, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:55 p.m.

Bedocs was employed by a tree removal company at the time of the accident and had been working on the site for several days. The homeowner had hired Bedocs’ team to remove about 10 trees on the property.
