Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees will be an assistant coach for the Boilermakers in their Citrus Bowl matchup against Louisiana State University on January 2, 2023, Purdue University announced.
Aside from coaching, Brees will also be allowed to participate in recruitment activities in Purdue where he was a star during his collegiate career from 1997 to 2000. Brees is also the Boilermakers' all-time passing yards and touchdown leader.
“I am extremely excited to work with our team over the next few weeks as we prepare for the Citrus Bowl," said Brees. "I see it not only as an opportunity to coach and mentor this group of young men, but represent all the former Purdue players that care so much about our program.”
Brees will be a temporary member of newly hired head coach Ryan Walters’s staff. Walters was hired from Illinois after Purdue let go of Jeff Brohm. His brother, offensive coordinator Brian Brohm, was named interim coach for the LSU contest.
Standing on the sidelines on January 2 could open the door for Brees to become a full time Purdue coach in the future.
