Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who is currently thinking of running for President again in 2024, has promised on Saturday, Jan. 29, to pardon those involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol Riots if he wins.
Trump, who is the only U.S. President to be impeached twice in office, was at a rally in Conroe, Texas when he promised to give out pardons to those who were caught or arrested during the Jan. 6 Capitol Riots when his supporters attempted to disrupt the certification process for the 2020 U.S. elections, according to the New York Post.
“If I run, and if I win, we will treat those people from January 6 fairly,” he said. “And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons, because they are being treated so unfairly.”
Over 700 people have been charged in the Capitol Riots, with at least eleven people, who were members of the far-right militia group Oath Keepers, receiving charges of seditious conspiracy. A House committee led by Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson is also investigating the case.
Many people continue to be shocked at Trump’s rhetoric regarding the failed attempt of his supporters to stop the certification process of the election, with many former White House officials comparing his talk to dictators from across history and the world, The Guardian reported.
“This is beyond being a demagogue to the stuff of dictators,” John Dean, a former White House counsel who was disbarred due to his involvement in the Watergate scandal, tweeted. “He is defying the rule of law. Failure to confront a tyrant only encourages bad behavior.”
“This alone is giving aid or comfort to an insurrection within the meaning of the 14th amendment, section three,” Richard Painter, former White House ethics counsel under the second Bush administration, said. “Trump is DISQUALIFIED from public office.”
Trump himself has attacked those who are investigating the events of Jan. 6, which led him to be impeached for a second time, though his acquittal means that he is allowed to try and regain the presidency in 2024.
“I hope we are going to have in this country the biggest protests we have ever had in Washington DC, in New York, in Atlanta and elsewhere, because our country and our elections are corrupt,” he said.
