A Florida man is recovering from a gunshot wound in his leg ... that came from his dog.
Gregory Dale Lanier, 35, was driving his pickup truck when his dog kicked his gun on the floor and when the gun went off, Lanier had a gunshot wound on his leg.
The Frostproof, Florida native told police that he believed that his gun was empty when he placed the gun on the center "hump" on the floor of his gray Ford F250. He just left the Blue Crab restaurant and after about two miles down the road, Lanier said he heard a "boom, saw smoke and felt a burning in his leg," according to the police report.
Apparently the dog, a tan and white bulldog, was "jumping around the truck "when it kicked the firearm and shot him. The bullet went through his left calf and exited out of his shin where it went through the plastic side panel of the driver's side door. He stopped at a BP gas station, wrapped the wound and asked the clerk to call an ambulance.
The gun in question was a Beretta 9mm semi-automatic pistol that had the safety off and a magazine inside. Lanier additionally had a loaded Martin rifle with a scope along with several boxes of .243 and .380 ammunition and spent casting in his truck. The victim -- if we could call him that -- claimed both firearms were empty and was surprised when the police told him that both guns were loaded.
He was treated at Florida Hospital, where he was released. Police ruled the shooting accidental and told Lanier to secure his firearms better and only use the manufacturer's recommended ammunition.
No charges have been filed against the dog whose name has not released.
This is not the first time that a dog has shot their master. In 2012, a hunter in France had to have his right hand amputated when his dog set off his gun as the two of them "cuddled" according to the BBC.
"It wasn't the dog's fault -- and he's adorable," the dog's owner said.
In 2011, Billy E. Brown was shot by his dog as he drove to go deer hunting. He was shot in the thigh.
