Dog Declared Hero After Leading Police to Injured Owner

Lassie would be proud of the Washington dog who went out of her way to lead the rescue of her elderly owner, who lay injured in a remote cabin.

Stevens County Sheriff's Deputy Wright met the shaggy pooch while on patrol, driving through a heavily wooded area. When Deputy Wright saw the dog sitting in the middle of the road, he stopped, attempting to coax the animal into his police cruiser.

The dog refused to cooperate, staying put there in the road. Wright couldn't see any homes in the vicinity, and left to look for residences that may be missing a pet. He had no luck, and returned to where he first saw the dog, who now lay in the same spot. He tried to move the dog from the middle of the road, surprised when it took up off a "slightly travelled, unmarked roadway," according to the Stevens County Sheriff's Office.

"Wright followed the dog, and it led him to a small summer cabin," law enforcement wrote in a Facebook post. "He began checking around the area and observed an elderly male laying on the ground calling for help a short distance from the cabin."

At the cabin, Wright met the dog's injured owner, an 84-year-old man who had fallen to the ground hours earlier. Deputy Wright was able to get the man the help he needed, preventing tragedy with the four-legged friend's help.

The dog, a 13-year-old rescue named Gita, returned the favor that day.

"Thank you, Deputy Wright," the Sheriff's Office wrote, "for going to the extra effort and thank you Gita for being a good girl and true hero!"
