David Guetta filmed the music video for his latest single "Play Hard" in Mexico City, but is now facing controversy for perpetuating stereotypes.
The music video in question, featuring Akon and Ne-Yo, depicts a Mexican Fiesta night with a dance competition where participants are wearing Mexican pointy boots with elongated toes and is set in a ranch. Mexican fans have vocalized their discontent over the portrayal of Mexico in the video and are stating that it presents a wrong image of Mexico city.
"Buena música, feo vídeo," writes one commenter, which translates to "Good music, bad video."
Another commenter points out that video unfairly stereotypes Mexicans and the Mexican culture, and then proceeds to ask (rhetorically) if it is fair to assume that all Germans drink beer, all Scottish men wear skirts, and if all Chinese people eat on the floor.
"I am Venezuelan and I do not like this video," shares another user. "Mexican culture has great things to show, but this showed the worst things. I think that was wrong Guetta."
