New reports suggest that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play Stephen Strange in the company's upcoming project "Doctor Strange." According to The Wire "multiple individuals close to the casting process" can confirm that Phoenix has had discussions" to play the lead role, although there is no deal in place.
This news, of course, comes before Marvel's big San Diego Comic-Con panel Saturday which is rumored to announce the film's existence. According to The Wrap Phoenix has "been mentioned most often" for the role and is "in consideration" to play Stephen Strange.
While Phoenix is an actor with particular taste in whatever role he chooses, it was long rumored that he would play the role of Lex Luthor in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" and even more it was said he was interested in playing the role. Although Jesse Eisenberg now has the role of Lex Luthor, the fact that Phoenix was interested does allow us to believe he wouldn't dismiss a comic-book franchise role.
Scott Derrickson is said to be directing with Jon Spaihts currently rewriting the script. The film will be produced by Marvel chief Kevin Feige. Furthermore executive producers on "Doctor Strange" are Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Stephen Broussard.
If you know anything of Doctor Strange then you know it follows a former neurosurgeon who serves as the “Sorcerer Supreme” — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange made his first appearance in the 1963 comic book series “Strange Tales” and would go on to have his own comic book series and would appear in several other comic books that included “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man” and “Nick Fury.”
Marvel has teased Doctor Strange in several of its other films including “Thor” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
