A video showing a prom king and queen’s winning dance during a senior prom night in 2017 is drawing flak, particularly for the songs played by a disc jockey at the time.

The video, which has already gotten about 16 million views, showed the DJ playing the hit song of Ed Sheeran, “Thinking Out Loud.”

In the song, Sheeran first sings the line: “When your legs don’t work like they used to before.”

The prom queen at the time was Sarah Mendenhall. She sat in the middle of the dance floor in a wheelchair and the scene just drew backlash from different people. Some claim that the DJ knew what he was doing and most deplored the actions.

People who got to see the footage felt it was inappropriate and insensitive, feeling sorry for Sarah as she sat in her wheelchair in the middle of the dance floor.

Others went on to say that they would have walked out if such had happened due to the embarrassment the whole scene brought. However, Mendenhall responded and hardly thought about the backlash that the video got.

“Hey everyone so this is me lol,” Mendenhall wrote. “I found it really funny and ironic. I didn’t know what was playing until way after cause I was tryna dance.”

The uploader, Celeste Orozco, also chimed in and gave her take on the backlash garnered by the said video. The video was taken in the wrong way and the uploader herself had to explain it after the footage was received in a different light.

“Had a great prom night and a good laugh about it the next day,” Orozco said. She also explained that she and Mendenhall were best friends and requested people to “please stop the hate.”
