Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal took the stage as presenters at the Emmys, choosing to announce the entire award for Best Directing in a Limited Series or Movie in Spanish.
"We heard there are some ratings problems, so we decided to try something bold," Gael began before switching to Spanish.
Diego then took over, addressing the Latino community directly in Spanish: "A big greeting to those who speak Spanish in this room and to the more than 50 million Spanish speakers in this country." The pair continued the presentation their mother language, listing the nominees, including Mexican director Isa López.
The Latino audience in the room applauded passionately, but the enthusiasm on social media was even more electric. The sight of these two stars standing up for their community in Spanish was moving and powerful, especially since this year's Emmys coincided with Mexico's Independence Day. While Gael and Diego spoke, millions of their compatriots back in Mexico were celebrating "El Grito," the traditional independence cry.
"To be honest I did get very emotional seeing two talented Mexicans speaking in Spanish at the Emmys. Good job Gael García Bernall and Diego Luna."
As actor John Leguizamo later pointed out, this year's Emmys featured the most diverse group of nominees in its history. Among the Latino contenders were Mexican-American Selena Gomez, Colombian actress Sofía Vergara, Puerto Rican Liza Colón-Zayas (who took home an Emmy), and Mexican actress Nava Mau, the first trans woman to compete in the category for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series.
Gael and Diego Back Together Again
The duo didn't just appear at the Emmys to promote Latino representation; they're also reuniting on-screen. On October 9th, they will premiere their first project together in years: "La Máquina." The series follows a boxer down on his luck (played by Gael) who, with the help of his best friend (Diego), returns to the ring after overcoming immense obstacles.
The show also stars Lucía Méndez and Jorge Perugorria, marking Eiza González's return to Spanish-language productions. Before attending the Emmys, Gael and Diego made a quick stop in Las Vegas, where they watched Mexican boxer Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez defeat Puerto Rican Martín Berlanga, celebrating the victory with their fellow countryman.
Before arriving to Los Angeles to present in the Emmys, the Mexican stars stopped in Las Vegas, to watch the fight between Saúl 'El Canelo' 'Alvarez and Martín Berlanga. They got to celebrate Canelo's win with the Mexican boxer.
