For the third time since his arrest, the New York City court handling Sean 'Diddy' Combs' case has rejected the request to grant him house arrest and the $50 million bail he was willing to pay to spend Christmas outside of jail.
Although the rapper and entrepreneur's attorneys complied with all the requests made by Judge Arun Subramanian—such as offering a multimillion-dollar bail amount and proposing to exchange his Miami mansion for an apartment in Manhattan as the artist's temporary residence—none of these measures sufficed.
Diddy is to await trial in jail. He is facing multiple charges of sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice
"The court finds that the government has presented clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions can reasonably assure the safety of the community at large," the judge stated in his ruling, referencing the prosecution's arguments against the defense's request.
Prosecutors had argued that part of Diddy's intentions was "to intimidate victims and witnesses into silence or cooperation with the defense." Several individuals involved in the case have reportedly experienced such efforts from the artist.
Where is Diddy being held?
Diddy is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, a facility notorious for overcrowding, poor hygiene, and strict rules, often cited as one of the worst jails in the United States for pretrial detainees.
This is the same facility where Mexican-American rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine was once held, along with figures like Jeffrey Epstein, the American financier who died by suicide before facing charges of sex trafficking and child abuse, and several individuals convicted of terrorism for their roles in the September 11, 2001, attacks on the Twin Towers.
Initially, Diddy's attorneys had proposed that he remain confined to his Miami mansion. Later, they suggested allowing him to stay in an apartment in the Upper East Side of New York City. However, the judge deemed it too challenging to adequately restrict his access to various communication devices.
Diddy had hoped to spend the months leading up to his trial outside of his cell at MDC Brooklyn.
When is Diddy's trial?
According to federal authorities in the United States, the rapper and music mogul is scheduled to stand trial in May 2025.
Judge Subramanian's ruling means Diddy will remain detained at Brooklyn's MDC until his trial date.
