A royal expert claimed on Monday that the late Queen Elizabeth II had scolded Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, on her conduct before her wedding, and that the late monarch had encouraged Meghan to find a way to make amends with her estranged father.
Katie Nicholl, a royal expert whose book “The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth's Legacy and the Future of the Crown” is set to release soon, shared excerpts of her writing which included an incident where the Queen had to intervene between Meghan and a staff member during her royal wedding preparations, according to Insider.
Nicholl claims that Meghan had gotten mad with a staff member during a menu tasting for her wedding due to the fact that a vegan dish had a taste of egg when she sampled it. The situation was “tense” until the Queen intervened between the two.
“Suddenly the Queen walked in and said, ‘Meghan, in this family we don't speak to people like that,’” Nicholl wrote.
Nicholl also highlighted the fact that the Queen was pushing Meghan to make amends with her long-estranged father, the 78-year-old Thomas Markle, and that she believed that the situation between the two was “poorly-handled,” Page Six reported.
“The Queen could see how damaging the situation was between Meghan and her father and she did speak to Meghan about it and tried to encourage her to talk to Thomas,” Nicholl wrote.
Thomas Markle was a controversial figure in Meghan’s life, openly consorting with the British press before her wedding despite advice from the Firm and flip-flopping about attending her wedding and walking her down the aisle, which King Charles III ended up having to do instead. She then sent him an emotional letter that he ended up leaking to the press.
“Please stop exploiting my relationship with my husband … I realize you are so far down this rabbit hole that you feel (or may feel) there’s no way out, but if you take a moment to pause I think you’ll see that being able to live with a clear conscience is more valuable than any payment in the world,” Meghan had wrote in her letter.
Another interesting wedding occurrence between the Queen and Meghan was the monarch’s confusion over Meghan’s choice of white for the wedding, since the Queen believes that she should have worn an off-white dress instead since she was already previously married.
“Perhaps it's a generational thing, but she believes if you've been married before, you wear off-white on your wedding day, which is what the Duchess of Cornwall did,” the source told Nicholl.
