Did Kate Middleton Show Support For Ukraine With Striking Commonwealth Day Ensemble?

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, was seen on Monday, March 14, during Commonwealth Day at Westminister Abbey wearing a blue ensemble that shows subtle support to Ukrainians during the Russian invasion of their country.

Middleton attended a service in Westminister Abbey with her husband, Prince William, his father Prince Charles, and Charles’ wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall in celebration of the British Commonwealth and all that it has given to the United Kingdom, according to Hello! Magazine.

Her outfit, however, sparked a lot of praise for what is seen as a subtle way of indicating her support of the embattled nation. The outfit was a royal blue Catherine Walker coat and a matching Sean Barratt hat that, when paired with the bright yellow flowers given to her during the services, evokes images of the Ukrainian flag, Entertainment Tonight reported.

She also wore a sapphire and diamond jewelry set that is believed to have previously belonged to Princess Diana, and which she used during her meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife Olena Zelensky.

Middleton and Prince William have come out to explicitly support freedom for Ukraine from the Russian invasion, with the two putting out a rare statement of support for Ukraine on Twitter that Zelenskyy was thankful for.

“In October 2020 we had the privilege to meet President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to learn of their hope and optimism for Ukraine’s future,” they said in a tweet. “Today we stand with the President and all of Ukraine’s people as they bravely fight for that future.”

They also visited the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London to speak with volunteers who are currently helping out during this fraught and fragile time.

Queen Elizabeth II, who was not in attendance for the Commonwealth Day due to a need to rest after her bout with COVID-19, has also donated money to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian appeal in open support of Ukraine.
