After years of being coaches for sixteen seasons in NBC’s “The Voice,” fans know that despite the bickering and fighting on the show, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine are really close friends. That’s why it’s a bit surprising to learn of a rumor saying that Shelton might have a hand in Levine’s departure so he can be replaced by Gwen Stefani.
The rumor originated from Globe, which ran a story that basically claimed that Shelton “secretly schemed” to remove Levine, giving way for Stefani’s entry into “The Voice” Season 17. However, fact-checking site Gossip Cop says that the tabloid’s report is ridiculous and untrue.
Globe reported that Shelton is actually very pleased with Levine’s departure. “Blake couldn’t be more pleased,” the publication quoted an unnamed source. “Blake and Adam didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of things, particularly Gwen.”
The tabloid even tried to make it appear that there is bad blood between Levine and Shelton. Levine reportedly “thinks it’s unprofessional to have one’s girlfriend on the judges’ panel, but Blake chalked it up to jealousy.” The article also said that both coaches were “bickering constantly over lighting, camera angles, who has the best album, you name it.”
Gossip Cop checked the story out and concluded that it’s untrue. A source involved with “The Voice” production even said that it’s a “total nonsense.”
In addition, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine’s constant bickering, which became a staple in the series, doesn’t imply that they are not friends at all. In fact, it’s just how the two guys bond.
“We are constantly at each other’s throats, and sometimes we really do get mad at each other,” Shelton told The Tennessean. “We’re those two guys you knew in high school where we have this bond that is unexplainable. It brings out the best and worst in both of us.”
Levine even posted a farewell message to “The Voice,” which specifically mentioned his buddy. “And, BLAKE FUCKIN’ SHELTON. I couldn’t hide my love for you if I tried,” the Maroon 5 singer wrote on Instagram. “Seriously. I tried. Can’t do it. Our friendship is and always will be one for the books.”
John Legend, one of the show’s coaches, opened up about the reason Levine left, and it had nothing to do with Shelton at all. “He’s been a friend of mine for a long time, and I’ve known him since before The ‘Voice,’” John told Extra. “We’re gonna miss him on the show, but I think he was ready and felt like it was the right time.”
