Twitter is in an absolute frenzy, following the alleged death of a young man named Alan. Users of the social media website are claiming that a young male named Alan was beaten to death due to his dedication to Canadian pop star Justin Bieber. The graphic viral photo circulating the website shows a collage of images of a young teen, in one image he is shown bloody, bruised and clearly beaten, wearing little clothing. In an array of other images, the teen is shown to be in treatment of some kind wearing a hospital mask and gown.

The text that accompanies the image claims that Alan, was battling cancer when he was beaten to death for identifying himself as a “Belieber.” A “belieber” is simply a fan of Justin Bieber, although his fanbase is incredibly dedicated and fierce. “Beliebers” often clash viciously on social media with another dedicated fandom who call themselves, “Directioners.”

“Directioners” are fans of the British boy band One Direction. And while it seems like being a fan of a pop musicians may be child’s play, these dedicated fans fiercely worship either Justin Bieber or One Direction. Another viral posting on Twitter claims that a members of a sub-sect of “Directioners” who identify themselves as “Larry Shippers” have committed suicide following a documentary that cause them to get bullied. British TV station, Channel 4 aired a documentary investigating the life of “Larry Shippers” who are considered the most extreme fans of One Direction, they also fantasize about an intimate relationship between two band members, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. After the documentary aired, 42 “Larry Shippers” allegedly committed suicide causing the hashtag, #RIPLarryShippers to trend.

And while we cannot validate the story of the beating of Alan and the alleged suicide of 42 “Larry Shippers,” we are concerned with the safety and psyche of these young fans who are vehemently dedicated to these pop stars. If these viral stories are true, may 42 “Larry Shippers” and Alan rest in peace.
