A Detroit man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the head on Valentine's Day, claiming he did it "to stop her from suffering."
The tragic incident unfolded on February 14, when 31-year-old Desuan Travon Ross and his girlfriend, Eboni Robinson, reportedly got into an argument while sitting in her car on Detroit's west side, according to the Detroit Police Department.
The dispute escalated when Ross allegedly stepped out of the vehicle and opened fire through the driver's side window, striking Robinson.
As Robinson attempted to flee, she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the front porch of a nearby home. Ross then allegedly retrieved a rifle and fatally shot her in the head, later telling police that the second shot was "to stop her from suffering," Fox 2 Detroit reported.
Police were called to the intersection at around 9:05 a.m. on February 14 in response to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found that Ross had barricaded himself inside a nearby home, leading to a prolonged standoff with authorities.
During the standoff, nearby residents were forced to either shelter in place or stay away from their homes as police negotiated with Ross. After several hours, Ross eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Police body camera footage allegedly captured Ross admitting to the shooting, though this footage was not played in court during his arraignment.
Ross was charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held in jail. He is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on February 24, followed by a preliminary examination on March 3.
