Following a CT scan Thursday of Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter's surgically repaired left ankle, doctors found a small crack in the area of the previous injury. While fortunately a new surgery will not be necessary, Jeter will not return to the field until after the All-Star break.
General Manager Brian Cashman discussed the injury in a pre-game press conference at Yankee Stadium and revealed that Jeter will not be back on the field anytime soon. He continued, and stated "this is obviously a setback." Manager Joe Giradi also commented on the injury telling reporters to "put two and two together," when asked if the tough Tamp workouts had anything to do with Jeter's visit to the doctor on Thursday.
The nagging injury occurred during Game 1 of last year's ALCS when Jeter fractured his ankle. He did however immediately have surgery and rehabbed during the off season. Jeter did report to spring training, but unfortunately felt discomfort by mid-March. At that point, the team admitted he likely would begin the season on the disabled list.
Jeter did not grace the field at the April 6 target date, as the Yankees hoped, and now it seems we will not see the Yankees captain on the field until after the All-Star break.
