A Denver resident displayed two swastikas in his apartment window just days after someone shattered his glass for featuring the Nazi emblem of hate and genocide.
Two swastikas were visible Monday from the third-story unit overlooking Colfax Avenue. Last week, the Denver Police Department (DPD) responded to reports of a broken window at the same address, where the first swastika was initially displayed. The DPD's bias-motivated crime unit is now investigating.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the tenant. Attempts to contact them went unanswered, and the property management company has not responded to inquiries, per 9News.
Community members have raised alarm over the hate symbols; many reached out to the Mountain States chapter of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL.)
"Whenever we see a symbol of hate or hear hateful rhetoric, it's always incumbent upon us to exercise our own voices, our own First Amendment rights, to say this isn't the value that we support as a community," Jeremy Shaver of the ADL told local news.
A barbershop beneath the apartment, unaffiliated with the display, has faced unintended backlash.
The business has received negative online reviews, and the owner said he's contacted local officials for help.
"I'm just disgusted that this can be allowed. That this kind of rhetoric can be in a place where I live," Alex McNiel, a neighborhood resident told local news . "You know, there's no shame."
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with either the broken window or the swastika displays.
