Democratic representatives in Congress are being bombarded with calls from dissatisfied constituents, urging them to "fight harder" against President Donald Trump's agenda.
"I can't recall ever receiving this many calls. People disgusted with what's going on, and they want us to fight back," said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.).
Multiple Democrats in Congress have reported that their offices have received historically high call volume in recent days, outnumbering even the number of calls received after politically significant events, such as the Oct. 7 attack, the Brett Kavanaugh hearings or even proceedings relating to Trump's earlier impeachments, reported Axios.
Phones have allegedly been "ringing off the hook without pause since we opened yesterday morning," said Aaron Fritschner, a spokesperson for Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.).
Some legislators are becoming frustrated with their base's expectations of them, indicating that constituents may not be fully aware of what these lawmakers can actually achieve.
"What I think we need to do more is: Put the onus on Republicans, so that the calls that we're getting are directed toward Republicans," Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) told Axios.
"There has definitely been some tension the last few days where people felt like: you are calling the wrong people. You are literally calling the wrong people," said a House Democrat.
Since Trump's inauguration, the 47th president and billionaire Elon Musk have made numerous moves attempting to dismantle the current federal bureaucracy and minimize the federal government as much as possible.
Democratic leaders have attempted to fight against their efforts in a plethora of ways, including demanding information on DOGE's operations from Trump, rallying around federal agencies being targeted by the new administration and attempting to "choke off" attempts to defund programs like Medicaid by using federal funding deadlines.
However, the Democratic Party lacks the congressional majorities necessary to actually prevent certain Republican measures.
"Our member energy is high and this won't be the last any office hears from everyday Americans who want us to fight harder to push back," said Britt Jacovich, a spokesperson for MoveOn, a group that has been calling Democratic representatives to demand action.
"We are going to use every tool we have, but I think there is this sense that we have legislative power, and we don't," said an anonymous House Democrat.
