US Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who presented him with a silver-plated pager.
The pager commemorates Israeli's covert attack targeting Hezbollah operatives in September 2024. Explosive-laden pagers detonated simultaneously in both Lebanon and Syria, killing over 30 people and injuring thousands, including innocent bystanders.
The operation faced significant international criticism, with experts at the United Nations experts condemned the tactic as a "terrifying violation of international law" due to the malicious manipulation of electronic devices to detonate simultaneously. Amnesty International called for an international investigation into the attacks, highlighting the gruesome aftermath.
"When that story broke, I was like oh I love it," Fetterman said, upon receiving the pager. "I love it, thank you," he told Netanyahu.
Online, many users condemned the gift, calling the glorification of an instrument of violence "sick" and "disgusting."
"The whole 'pager' thing is sick. Totally sick," one comment read. "Even if you somehow think Israel's killing and maiming people was good (like, if you think they maimed terrorists, and it was good) how could you celebrate the device? Nobody celebrates napalm. No one celebrates atomic bombs."
"A US Senator cheering on terrorism," another wrote. "If handing out these pagers doesn't say 'supremacist psychopath,' I don't know what does," added one user.
Fetterman was widely criticized, with users questioning how his trip to Israel and relationship with Netanyahu benefited his constituents. He was described as "disgraceful," "cruel," and "an absolute embarrassment to the state of Pennsylvania and the country as a whole."
His acceptance of the gift comes amid Israel's resumed attacks on Gaza following a temporary Ceasefire agreement. Over 400 Palestinians were killed in airstrikes Tuesday, with at least 91 killed Thursday, per Reuters.
Fetterman, a vocal supporter of Israeli attacks on Hamas and Hezbollah, has not responded to the backlash caused by the silver pager.
