Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly announced on Monday he won't seek reelection because his cancer has returned.

In a social media post, the Virginia Rep. said "when I announced my diagnosis six months ago, I promised transparency." "After grueling treatments, we've learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I'll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace."

Connolly, who began serving as a lawmaker in 2009, added that he will "soon" step back as ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, a post he held after fending off a challenge from fellow Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in December, who sought to bring about generational change to the committee.

"With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter full of pride in what we've accomplished together over 30 years. My loving family and staff sustain me. My extended family - you all have been a joy to serve," concluded Connolly, 75.

Connolly is the first Democratic Rep. to announce he won't seek reelection. He will likely be joined by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, who is expected to make an announcement of her own in the next days. Some Democrats expect there will be a wave of retirements among their older members amid a sustained effort to oust Democrats' most senior lawmakers.

Schakowsky's retirement would not come as a total surprise, as she has reportedly been eyeing it for months. In fact, she is already facing a longshot primary challenge from 26-year-old progressive influencer Kat Abughazaleh.

The 14-term congresswoman was one of eight House Democrats— most over 70 years old— facing a primary challenge from a younger insurgent. In her district. While Abughazaleh has gained media attention, some expect the competition is likely to be among more established Illinois Democrats. State Sen. Laura Fine and Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss are widely expected to enter the race after Schakowsky makes her plans public.
