In the words of Oprah Winfrey, “It seems as if there is a new Emmett Till everyday.” It’s sad and upsetting that it has become normal for black men to be killed by police officers. In most cases very little is done to seek justice for families but with recent events, the officers in blue are being held accountable for their actions. An off-duty police officer accused of shooting an unarmed black man to death during a road rage incident is being hit with criminal charges.
According to NY1, Officer Wayne Isaacs faces second-degree murder charges for the shooting of Delrawn Small on July 4. Small was unarmed, but police officers initially said he punched Isaacs through the window several times before the shooting. Contrary to police claims, surveillance video footage shows Small walking up to Isaacs’ car window, and then immediately getting shot.
Small’s wife said that she is relieved that Isaacs will be facing criminal charges, while her lawyer said he is confident that the correct office is trying this case.
“ I want justice for my husband, Delrawn Small,” Wenona Small said. “ I want Officer Wayne Isaacs to spend the rest of his life in jail, and I will be at every court proceeding and hearing until there’s justice for my husband.
This case is the first Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has brought since Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed his office to act as an independent prosecutor in police-involved shootings.
“Certainly, the fact that an indictment has been secured for murder demonstrates that this new system works,” Attorney Sanford Rubenstein said.
In the past we have seen countless police officers have charges brought up against them and when taken to court they were either found not guilty, or they were found guilty for a lesser crime. While this an indictment is a step in the right direction it is very important for police officer to realize that Black Lives Matter. We shouldn’t have to constantly watch our backs and pray that we make it home at the end of the day because of all the senseless violence.
Small’s family has filed a $25 million lawsuit against the city police department. Isaacs has currently been suspended without pay from the NYPD.
