's Defense Minister has denounced a wave of "misogynistic" online abuse directed at a high-ranking commander whose ship sank in a storm, with accusations labeling her a "diversity hire," according to a report.

Yvonne Gray captained the Royal New Zealand Navy's dive and hydrographic ship named HMNZS Manawanui as it sank during a survey mission after losing power in the sea, according to The Times. The Manawanui's sinking marked the first loss of a naval ship for New Zealand since World War II.

Gray was able to save 75 crew members after ordering them to abandon the ship. Despite this, the sinking triggered criticism and harmful narratives regarding her leadership abilities and qualifications, mostly in relation to sexuality and gender.

New Zealand's Defense Minister Judith Collins responded to the criticism, labeling the attacks on Gray as unnaceptable. Collins stressed that Gray's background should not be overshadowed by sexist commentary, citing a court of inquiry was underway to determine the cause of the accident.

"The one thing that we already know did not cause it is the gender of the ship's captain," Collins said in a press conference.

Collins also went on to say the "deeply concerning misogynistic narrative" was mostly coming "from these armchair admirals."

Furthermore, the court of inquiry will give an interim report by mid-November. Until then, Gray continues to receive support from navy leaders who seemingly agree with her decion making process during the crisis.
