The case of a 15-year-old British girl who went missing on Aug. 4, 2019, during a family vacation appears far from settled. Despite the findings of the Malaysian coroner on Monday, the parents of Nora Quoirin feels that some kind of foul play was involved.
The reason behind this is likely because the teenager was found naked. However, reports claim that she wandered off wearing only her underwear after climbing out of the cottage window according to police in a report from the New York Post.
The body was positively identified by her family through a charity representing Nora’s family. Negeri Sembilan police chief Mohamad Mat Yusop also confirmed that “the family confirmed that the body is Nora Anne” Quoirin.
“Nora is our first child. She has been vulnerable since the day she was born. She is so precious to us and our hearts are breaking,” Nora’s mother said.
Nora’s naked body was found just over a mile from the resort on Aug. 13 by volunteers present in the area. Malaysian authorities said that the teenager died of intestinal bleeding due to starvation and stress. This was confirmed by British pathologist Nathaniel Cary who performed the second autopsy in the United Kingdom.
On the angle of the teenager being sexually assaulted, the extensive autopsy was unable to back the claim. There was no evidence of a struggle. The body was also severely decomposed when it was found.
Further, there was no suspicious activity before the teen’s appearance to back the claim. There were no ransom requests or signs that someone broke into the family’s cottage.
Upon learning of the verdict, the teen’s parents were pretty disappointed. They felt that the coroner should have ruled it as an open verdict, meaning foul play was possible despite the lack of proof.
“We still believe this is the only appropriate verdict because, throughout the testimonies presented in this case, layers of (professional) evidence have confirmed what we always believed — that Nora was abducted,” the parents said.
