A young woman was dragged 100 meters down a street after her drunk mother hit her with a car.
27-year-old Keely Palmer was trapped for hours beneath a Toyota Starlet driven by her drunk mother, 58-year-old Dale Palmer.
On Sunday, May 2, emergency services responded to a home at Caringbah South in Sydney, Australia, and found Keely trapped under the car.
After her son, Kyle's birthday celebration, Dale, who police allege was almost three times drunk than the legal limit, got behind the wheel of her car and began to leave.
"There was a family gathering at the mother's house and an incident occurred in a street outside a driveway," Police Chief Inspector Gary Ford said, Dailymail reported.
Keely was struck by the car when she tried to stop her mother. She was dragged for about 100 meters before her drunk mother regained senses and applied the brakes.
Emergency services were able to free Keely after hours of effort. She was rushed to a nearby hospital.
"The 27-year-old woman is not well enough to be spoken to at this time. She was trapped underneath that vehicle for a little over an hour before emergency services were able to free her," Ford said.
Keely underwent surgery on Sunday and is reported to be in stable condition. She is expected to recover soon.
"She was just bellowing, crying, screaming. It was pretty shocking," Neighbour Amber Wardrop-Barros told 9 News.
"You could just hear her screaming. People were saying, ‘Can someone get a jack’. So I thought maybe someone was stuck under a car," she told reporters.
Dale was arrested and later charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (PCA or Prescribed concentration of alcohol), and high-range PCA. Her license has been suspended.
"It’s most certainly difficult circumstances for police to attend," Ford said. "We’re hoping to get some information from anyone who may have been at that party throughout the night."
Dale was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Sutherland Local Court next Wednesday.
"I always see the bloke out the front gardening and the kids always go out on the boat. The woman may have been dropping the kids off and then came back. They seem like a nice family," another neighbor, Ryan told local media.
