Dallas Cowboys reach multi-year, multimillion-dollar deal with AT&T, rename Cowboys Stadium Creative Commons

Cowboys Stadium located in Arlington, TX. will be going through some changes before the start of the football season. The first being that it's changing its name to something a little less nostalgic -- AT&T Stadium. The Dallas Cowboys have reached a multi-year, multimillion-dollar deal with the phone service company as of Thursday. Team owner Jerry Jones said the move comes from a desire to make his stadium "more familiar than the White House."

The team did not reveal the specifics of the deal, but sports consultant Marc Ganis of SportsCorp Ltd. estimated that the deal was worth $20 million annually between the course of 20 and 30 years, the Associated Press reported. Jones said he hopes the telecommunications company deal will lead to bigger marquee events at the stadium, which is known for some flashy amenities, including a retractable roof and high-definition TVs looming over the field.

"(It) is very important ... that AT&T stadium be where the big events happen, where exciting things happen. And it's beyond Cowboys games,'' Jones said.

The building replaced Texas Stadium when it first opened in 2009, increasing seating capacity to 100,000 as well. The stadium's debut game garnered a crowd of 105,121 people, a single-game NFL record, Bloomberg reported. It is valued at $1.2 billion, according to Forbes Magazine. Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck said the city will receive 5 percent of total revenue, which will go toward paying off the 15-year debt it reaped when it constructed the stadium.

''We have two great companies right in the middle of our city who are doing wonderful things for our city, why wouldn't we want to have that partnership?'' Cluck said. ''This is a good deal for us.''

The first Sunday-night-football game at the renamed stadium will take place Sept. 8 as the Cowboys square off with East Division Conference rival the New York Giants.
