A Vermont dad was caught on camera swinging an excavator at two police officers who came to arrest his son for burglary.
The attack happened on June 14, when state troopers, Gabe Schrauf and Skylar Velasquez were arresting 24-year-old Brandon Tallman outside his home in Hardwick.
Brandon was being arrested on burglary and assault charges stemming from an incident a few days before.
"It could have been, ‘Sir, turn around, put your hands around your back, you’re under arrest for an assault,’ and they would have driven away," said Vermont State Police Capt. Matt Daley, WCAX reports.
A dashcam video shows the officers grappling with Brandon before throwing him to the ground, while his parents try to stop them from arresting their son.
Brandon’s mom, Amy Tallman, is seen getting into a scuffle with the troopers as they try to pull him away.
Meanwhile, his dad, Wayne Tallman, gets into a red excavator parked in the driveway and approaches the troopers.
The machine's heavy metal shovel begins wildly swinging at the officers as they struggled to cuff the mother and son.
"The suspect's parents attempted to hinder the arrest, and ultimately the father menaced and attempted to assault the troopers using an excavator," Vermont State Police wrote in their Facebook post.
One of the officers manages to dodge the machine’s shovel and then points a gun at the dad, while the other restrained the mother and son on the ground.
"It was a dangerous situation that you were put in, and in the end, you came out on top, you affected the arrest, you guys both went home that night. That's the goal of why we went there," Capt. Daley said.
"They don’t have a scenario at the academy where we practice this one," he added.
Eventually, the troopers were able to arrest all Tallmans without injuries, police said.
While Wayne was charged with aggravated assault on a protected official, resisting arrest, impeding, and reckless endangerment, Amy was cited for impeding an officer.
Brandon was arrested on his original charge of aggravated assault and burglary.
