The murder mystery of a couple, whose bodies were found in a field in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India on Oct. 19 has been solved and is confirmed to be a case of honor killing, the authorities said on Monday, Oct. 25.
The girl’s father, identified as Ram Kumar, and her unidentified cousin were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police for their involvement in the double-murder.
“We have arrested the girl’s father and her cousin for their involvement in the killing,” News18 quoted Unnao Superintendent of Police (SP) Avinash Pandey as saying.
According to the police, the investigation began on Oct. 19, after the people of Bhikharipur village alerted them about a dog found running around in the neighborhood with a human hand in its mouth.
Police officers and emergency medical personnel were immediately dispatched to the village. The responding officers recovered the human hand from the area and initiated a search to locate the victim.
The search led officers to an agricultural field in the village where they made the shocking discovery of the bodies of a girl and boy.
“On recovery of a human hand, we started a search operation. Our team found the bodies of a girl and boy from a field owned by Ram Singh of the village,” Pandey said.
The bodies were sent to a medical examiner’s office for an autopsy and the results revealed the victims died of strangulation.
During the preliminary investigation, officers learned the victims were residents of the same village and were allegedly in a relationship.
The female victim was identified as Sarla and the male victim was identified as Balakrishna, son of Ram Singh.
The boy’s father approached the police and filed a complaint against the girl’s father and several others accusing them of killing his son.
Based on the complaint, the Unnao Police detained Sarla’s father, and her family members people for questioning.
“During questioning, the girl’s father confessed to the crime,” added the SP.
In a statement given to local media, the officer said the girl’s father told the investigators that on Oct. 12 night he found out that his daughter is missing from their house.
Following which he and his worried family members set out to look for the girl.
“Sarla’s father told us that he found his daughter and Balakrishna in a compromising position. Sarla’s father and uncle attacked Balakrishna with sticks and later strangulated him to death. When the girl threatened her father that she would inform villagers about the murder, she was also strangulated to death,” added the SP.
