Paced by an explosive offensive effort and stingy shutdown defense, Azul blew past defending champion Santos 3-0 and put themselves in prime position to advance to their first final since 2008.

Gerardo Flores started the scoring for Cruz Azul, sending a header from the center of the box between the pipes at the 3-minute mark of the match, giving his squad the early advantage.

Pablo Barrera upped the lead for Cruz minutes later as the 2008 runner-up looked extremely comfortable as the match progressed.
When Rafael Figueroa of Santos accidentally kicked the ball into his own goal at the 89th minute while trying to make a defensive keep-away play, Cruz Azul was comfortably in front as the final minutes of the match ticked away.
With the 3-goal advantage heading into Sunday's second leg, Cruz looks like they may in fact get back to the final that has been in reach during recent years.
The winner of this semifinal series will take on Club America in the final after America disposed of Monterrey by way of a 4-3 aggregate.
