A group of Turkish archeologists believe they have found a piece the Cross of Jesus. The relic was found inside a small stone box engraved with two crosses. The cross of Jesus or the True Cross as it is also known is the cross upon which Jesus of Nazareth was crucified.

The team of archeologists found the small relic box in the ruins of Balatlar Church. The church was built in the year 660 in Sinop, Turkey on the shores of the Black Sea. One of the archeologists Gülgün Köro?lu told the Hurriyet Dailey News this find is the most important artifact the team has ever discovered. They say the box likely contains a relic belonging to a Saint or a piece of the Cross of Jesus.

"We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross," Köro?lu said to the media. "This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far."

The box has been taken to the Mimar Sinan University laboratory for further study. Reports are suggesting the archeologists believe the chest belonged to a religious individual of some importance. They also hypothesise who ever own the box believed a piece of the True Cross is contained inside.

The Cross of Jesus is one of the most coveted pieces of Biblical history. If found it would be a flocking point for millions of Christians. There have been thousands of relics and items said to belong to Christ and the Saints since the death of Jesus.

Some relics have been dismissed as imposters and others believed to be the real thing sit on display in various museums and churches, not to mention the Vatican. An artifact housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City was, upon its' discovery believed to be the Holy Grail, the cup used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. The "Antioch Chalice" as it is called is now believed to be from the sixth century and therefore loses its' credibility as a possible Holy Grail.

NBC quotes John Calvin a Protestant thinker from the 16th-century and the first to propose the theory of "predestination" who believed all relics are false. The Protestant religion was founded on many beliefs one being the veneration of Saints and relics is idolatry and takes focus away from God. Calvin once said, according to NBC if all the relics claiming to be the True Cross "were collected together, they would make a big ship-load."
